Background of the study
Water pollution poses a significant threat to human health and ecosystem integrity. In Asaba, rapid urbanization, industrial effluents, and agricultural runoff have led to the contamination of water bodies, adversely impacting public health (Amadi, 2023). The presence of harmful chemicals and pathogens in water sources increases the risk of waterborne diseases, jeopardizing community health and economic productivity (Uche, 2024). Research indicates that effective water quality management is essential for preventing health crises and ensuring sustainable development (Amadi, 2023). This study investigates the extent of water pollution in Asaba, exploring its direct effects on human health. It further examines the interplay between industrial activities, agricultural practices, and urban waste disposal in contributing to water contamination. The findings aim to provide evidence-based recommendations for improved water management practices, thereby reducing health risks and fostering a safer environment (Uche, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Asaba Local Government Area is facing severe challenges due to water pollution, which has escalated public health risks in the community. Contaminated water sources have led to an increase in waterborne diseases, significantly affecting the quality of life and productivity of residents. The lack of effective water treatment and regulatory oversight has compounded these issues, making it imperative to assess the impact of water pollution on human health. This study aims to quantify the extent of water contamination, identify its sources, and propose sustainable solutions to mitigate adverse health effects (Amadi, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the levels of water pollution in Asaba.
To evaluate the impact of polluted water on human health.
To recommend effective water management and treatment strategies.
Research questions:
What are the main sources of water pollution in Asaba?
How does water pollution affect human health in the region?
What measures can improve water quality and reduce health risks?
Research Hypotheses:
Water pollution is significantly linked to the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Asaba.
Industrial and agricultural activities are the primary contributors to water contamination.
Implementation of advanced water treatment methods can reduce health risks.
Significance of the study
This study will provide critical insights into the public health implications of water pollution, guiding policymakers and environmental managers in developing sustainable water management practices. The findings are expected to contribute to improved regulatory frameworks and public health interventions in Asaba (Uche, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing water pollution and its impact on human health within Asaba Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Water Pollution: The contamination of water bodies with harmful substances.
Waterborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by the ingestion of contaminated water.
Water Management: Strategies and practices used to maintain water quality.
